Green Blogging from the Evergreen State

Greetings from the Emerald City!  I am settling in to the Pacific Northwest after enjoying a most excellent roadtrip from Philadelphia to Seattle.  I will resume blogging in June with a post frequency of 1 – 2 times per week on each blog: AppleJade, Arboreality, and Brainripples.

At AppleJade we will be discussing healthy, happy lifestyle through attitude, gardening, cooking, and simple, green living.

At Arboreality we will be exploring the woods of Western Washington and other localities within reasonable driving distance.

At Brainripples we will be sharing methods of creative exploration, successful approaches to working independently, and unique perspectives from featured artists.

You will also find me blogging at the Pennwriters Area 6 HQ, a new blog created as a resource for writers living in and around southeastern Pennsylvania.  I will be blogging with other Pennwriters about local news, events, information, and of course – writers!

If you are a writer in the Puget Sound Area (Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, Kitsap Peninsula, Bellingham) and would like to join my newly forming Seattle Pennwriters Critique Groups, please contact me for more information.

More to follow!

PS – Today’s image is of the columbine flowers still growing happily in my Washington gardens.

PPS – Please bear with me as I acclimate to the new WordPress interface, and please let me know when things don’t look *quite right*.

Health Perspective from Joy Nash

This woman’s got something to say, and the voice to say it with.  Take a minute to hear some wisdom from Joy Nash, and tell us what you think.  More from me next week!

Taking responsibility for your health

In order to achieve our health goals, we have to take responsibility for our own health.

At times, we all need help with a difficult challenge.  Sometimes the challenge itself is simply asking someone to give us a hand.  It’s good to ask for help when you need it – and it’s just as good to stand up and take care of yourself when you can.

Take a moment, and consider: what are your health goals?

Many of us have the same health goals: we want energy, stamina, and strength; we want to feel good – free from chronic pain; we want a body that feels good, and that we feel good about.

Now consider: where are you in the process of achieving those goals?

One easy way to become frustrated when working on a goal, is to create an unrealistic goal.  Health in a realistic sense is not a benchmark, or a finite, permanent trophy we can obtain.  We don’t wake up one proud day, smile, and say “AHA!  NOW I am healthy!  Fini!”

Health is a topic we’re going to explore often at AppleJade.  The word itself, though used frequently, is not clearly defined.

What is health?  What is your idea of health?

I believe that health and well-being are an ongoing, dynamic process – not a static goal to be acquired and completed.  I also believe that health is different for each of us.  Health is not an attribute like brown hair or green eyes – it’s a state of being, and arguably a state of mind.

Another question: how do you pursue your health goals?

In America, many of us are familiar with a system of medicine which is as much invested in political and economic processes as it is in our day-to-day wellness.  We see advertisements along with our primetime television specials speaking to the myriad solutions for ailments and illness.

We also are taught to seek and trust professional medical advice when we are ill.  In fact, here at AppleJade, I will remind you often that I am not a doctor or a nutritionist – I’m just a woman who takes an active interest in her health.

If you need medical assistance, SEEK A QUALIFIED MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL IMMEDIATELY.

That said, I believe that in addition to our existing healthcare system, we also have a vast resource of wellness which is currently available to all people: ourselves.

At AppleJade, we will share an ongoing discussion about a very simple idea:

Look to yourself for health.

More next week – have an excellent weekend folks.
